NONFICTION
Please submit a query letter. Nonfiction submissions must be between 2,500 and 12,000 words in length and be grounded in Northern California (e.g. a piece could address an issue that significantly affects Northern California, an event that occurred here, or a local resident). Essays, first-person narratives, and reportage are all welcome.

FICTION
Please submit a story in its entirety. While authors should reside in Northern California, a story need not concern or take place in the region.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Please submit no more than ten photos taken in Northern California, along with a brief cover letter telling us about yourself and your work, and why you feel it would be a good fit for the magazine.

POETRY
Please submit up to five poems. While poets should reside in Northern California, the work need not concern the region.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD
A Note from the Field should provide readers a window into a part of the region that is often overlooked, or a well-known place that the writer has a unique connection to. These 500-750 word vignettes can describe a particular experience, or convey a unique feature of a particular place. The definition of "place" can be interpreted broadly—as a campground, a bar, a city, a wilderness area, etc. It should be engaging, and there is room for humor. The magazine's mission is to investigate the region's environments, cultures, and histories, and these dispatches from different corners of the region should contribute to that mission. Send your Notes to notes@calnorthern.net.
